a new year in the studio ☀️

with the end of the festivities and holidays, it’s nice to finally quieten down to recalibrate, reflect and find a little calm after a busy and rough season.

at the close of every year, I set aside time to journal and reflect on the year that has passed and look to the year ahead. as someone who is very fearful of change, I hope to be less afraid — of trying new things, meeting new people, visiting new places and even trying new art forms and mediums.

“do you trust Me?”

in 2020, I suddenly lost someone I loved dearly just before the pandemic hit. in 2021, another loved one passed away mere weeks before my wedding. and last year, yet again. the past few years have been spent learning to navigate this very complex journey of loss even as life went on.

something I have learnt about grief is that it’s not just about sadness. it’s also guilt. anxiety. anger. self-blame. fear. loneliness. a flurry of emotions all bundled in one. grief sometimes presents itself as a huge blurry fog and i busied myself with work, dulling that heavy ache with whatever could offer me instant comfort - retail therapy, food, travel. and gradually that also led to staying away from social media & gatherings.

in my quiet desert, God met me there like He always does. I’m reminded yet again that God may not always give us the answers we’re looking for, but what He promises is His presence in our grief, His peace in our anxiety and His comfort in our pain. life may not be the same but we have a hope that will anchor us through whatever this life will bring.

it took really long to string everything into words and i’m sharing this because it might help someone who’s struggling too. thank you for sticking around even though I’ve been gone for awhile, your support means a lot to me 🤍 the hope letter has shaped a decade of my life (some of you have been w me since 2015) and I look forward to what the next season will bring 💌

each time I look at a particular piece of art that I've created, I instantly remember when it was created + what I was going through at that point of time.

a few months ago I shared the journey of my illustrations from twenty seventeen till now - not just to document the evolution of artistic styles or techniques or inspirations behind the line illustrations
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
but as a reminder to ourselves that:
growth takes time &
healing takes time
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
and that we’ll look back
not counting the years we’ve lost
nor the time we’ve wasted
nor the imperfections we see
nor the pain and losses
we’ve had to go through
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
instead we’ll take heart in all that
life has brought us through
the lessons learnt
the valleys and mountains
& by the grace of God
we’ll find the courage and strength
no matter what lies ahead
